The Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in the South West of Germany is an area of over 2,300 square miles of imposing mountains, gentle hills, deep valleys and old forests consisting mostly of dark pine and fir trees which gave rise to its name. It is next to Donaueschingen, the originating point of the Danube, and between Freiburg and Lake Constance, between Villingen and Lake Titisee, - and between Baden-Baden and Schaffhausen in North Switzerland (Shaffhausen is home of the Rhinefalls - the largest waterfalls in Europe). Due to its convenient location it is ideally suited to explore and enjoy The Black Forest and surrounding destinations such as the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen, Lake Constance, Switzerland and Alsacia. The town was founded more than 700 years ago by the dukes of Zaehringen, who had been powerful figures in Southern Germany and Switzerland during the early middle ages. The town of Bräunlingen, with its idyllic old town, the historic town wall and the city gate bear witness to the past. The old romanic church and the museum are also worth a visit. As mentioned above, the town is conveniently located near the intersection of three Bundesstraßen (federal highways) in the immediate vicinity of Donaueschingen.
